Jilting The word jilted derives from sexual conduct but it can be applied to business practices. Jilting in this respect is an economic as well as emotional issue. To jilt a person is to unexpectedly jerk them around emotionally In sexual situations jilting makes a statement about something. In business it is to make an extra profit and garner some emotional satisfaction in the process. For example, a person might order a piece of pie in a restaurant. The price is very high and so are the expectations of the diner. When the piece of pie comes it is a third of the size of an ordinary serving. The diners expectations are dashed. The waiter could have soften the blow by mentioning up front that the portions were small but the pie was good. Many people would go ahead and order anyway. This type of business is probably not a business but the personal sandbox of its owner who is emotionally needy and needs to feel some sense of power and control over helpless but polite people. Jilting is a management problem for small business. Without supervision employees can start playing games with the customers. On of these games is feigning moves to provoke a visceral reaction in the customer. For, example a person is in a hurry and orders four parts. The clerk comes to the counter and states he has three. This induced an emotional response in the customer. However, the clerk had four parts all the time and was just fooling around. At question is are the ethics of manipulating one's clients. |
