Gifting Gifting is when a businessman gives extra consideration to a customer. This extends to the behavior of employees of a company who extend extra considerations to certain customers. Gifting is generally done to build goodwill in the community but its use sometimes goes to extremes. When gifting becomes frequent with employees it starts to become a form of fraud. Here, the employee extends a deep discount in expectation of some kick-back from the customer* be it a boat trip, sports tickets, and the like. When the owner of a business gifts to excess they are essentially giving away money. This in itself is a deviation from one's self-regarding duty to make a profit. It violates a fundamental principle that commands businessmen to "do business in a business like way." When gifting has become an obsession they are no longer running a business rather their own personal sandbox in which they are King or Queen bestowing gifts on the world. * quid pro quo
