Button Hole

A powerful tactic used to overwhelm a client and “close a deal.” This tactic operates at the intellectual, emotional level. A savvy business person can size up a client in a few short minutes. They can sense where a person is coming from; whether it is the sports they enjoy; the church they attend; the books they have read and so on. These powerful manipulators can feign genuine association with the client. They use the words clients use against them using a form of pseudo logic. In short to “button hole” a person is to overpower them emotionally and intellectually. Being forthright and honest is not the object here; closing the deal at all costs is. This may not always be ethically questionable behavior. However, in many instances the end result is that the client likely receives less value for the product or service than if they had dealt with a more open and honest business person in the first place.
