Because I Can

This is the sort of ethics one finds associated with a large corporation such as a phone company. Fees and conditions are forced on the customer sometimes with attitude such as"because I can.". What can an ordinary person do in the face of such legal and economic might? Here there is an element of helplessness on the part of the buyer, a feeling of being exploited.

Small business are not exempt from the toying with the public in this way. lf you ask some business people why they break the rules they might reply "because I can." Here, might makes right, and it is the guiding principle of morality. The only rule is "don't get caught."

It is difficult to assess the ethicacy of having an attitude but such an approach goes against the common moral notion people are taught since birth, "be considerate, don't abuse people." A "because I can attitude" goes against the civilizing process that moves people and nations to higher civilized ground. To accede to such an attitude is to turn the clock back running counter to social building.
